Shubman Gill was hospitalized in Chennai due to a decrease in his platelet count, which occurred after he missed India’s opening match in the 2023 Cricket World Cup against Australia at the renowned MA Chidambaram Stadium in the city. Following medical treatment, he was promptly discharged from the hospital and subsequently traveled to Ahmedabad. This journey took place on Wednesday, coinciding with India, led by Rohit Sharma, securing a victory against Afghanistan in New Delhi.
During the year 2023, Shubman Gill has established himself as a formidable presence in the One Day International (ODI) format. He has emerged as India’s most prolific batsman, amassing an impressive total of 1230 runs. His batting average stands at an impressive 72.35, and he has maintained a healthy strike rate of 105.03, showcasing his consistency and effectiveness as a key contributor to the team’s success in ODIs. Once Shubman Gil was fit, it was an obvious choice that the Punjab batter would replace Ishan Kishan.
Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Indian cricket team, expressed his sentiments regarding the decision to replace Ishan Kishan with Shubman Gill in the playing XI. Rohit acknowledged the unfortunate nature of Ishan Kishan having to miss out and empathized with him, recognizing that Kishan had stepped up when the team needed him.
Furthermore, Rohit highlighted the significance of Shubman Gill’s return to the team. He praised Gill’s contributions as a special player for India over the past year, particularly at the venue of the match. This suggested that the decision to bring Gill back into the side was based on his proven abilities and the positive impact he has had on the team’s performance.

“Gill is back in place of Ishan, unfortunate for Ishan to miss out, feel for him, he stepped up when we needed him. Gill has been a special player for us over the past year or so, especially at this ground and we wanted him back,” Rohit said.
