Shubman Gill is not playing the First Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against Australia. The Indian Team is locking horns with Australia for the First Test at the Optus Stadium in Perth. Team India Captain Jasprit Bumrah won the toss and decided to bat first. Find out why Shubman Gill is missing from today’s Test match against Australia
“We are going to bat first, looks like a good wicket. Very confident with our preparation. We played a Test match here in 2018 so we know what to expect.”, Bumrah said at the time of the toss.
However, when the team sheets were revealed, it was found that Shubman Gill was not playing in the First Test against Australia.
Why is Shubman Gill Not Playing Today Against Australia?
Shubman Gill has avoided a serious injury. He sustained a finger blow during practice in Perth. Scans show no fracture, only minor tissue damage. Gill will hence miss the first Test in Perth. However, the team management expects him to return for the second Test in Adelaide. This match will be a day-night encounter.
Shubman Gill hurt his left thumb while fielding during a practice session at WACA. Initial reports suggested he might have fractured his thumb. This raised concerns about his availability for the series. Fortunately, scans showed that he had only a minor tissue injury with no fracture.
He did not join the team for practice on Tuesday. Medical staff are monitoring his progress. The team is optimistic about his recovery.
Rohit Sharma Also Missing Out
India’s regular Test skipper Rohit Sharma is also missing out on this Test match. Ahead of the start of the India vs Australia Border Gavaskar Trophy, Rohit Sharma and his wife Ritika Sajdeh were blessed with their second child, a baby boy. Thus, Rohit requested a paternity leave for the First Test against Australia.
In place of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, the team has Dhruv Jurel and Devdutt Padikkal to the Playing XI. Jurel has played just 3 Test Matches for the Indian Team. He has scored 190 runs at an average of 63.33 with a best of 90. Meanwhile, Devdutt Padikkal has only played one game and has batted only one time before. He scored 65 runs against England on debut.
The Indian team has also handed a debut to Nitish Kumar Reddy, who impressed during the T20I series against Bangladesh last month. However, the duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja is also not playing this game. Washington Sundar has been added as the lone spinner.
