“Hundreds are brilliant, stats are great, but it has to be team first”: Doull slams Babar

New Zealand commentator Simon Doull has slammed Pakistani skipper Babar Azam for putting his personal milestones ahead of the team. Doull heavily criticized Babar during live commentary, and the footage of the event quickly went viral on social media.

Almost 400 runs were scored in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) match between Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators, which was a spectacle. Babar led his team to 240/2 in 20 overs, and Quetta finished the chase with 10 balls remaining.

Babar himself topped the team’s scoring charts with a 65-ball 115 before Jason Roy performed the unfathomable and scored 145 off of 63.

While both Babar and Roy put in a phenomenal show with the bat, it was the former’s dip in scoring rate around the century mark that left a few fuming. Doull, commentating on-air, noticed the change in gear, and didn’t hold himself back from criticizing Babar.

“Rather than putting the team first… the last little while, that’s all that been happening. Rather than looking for boundaries, still, so much firepower to come. Hundreds are brilliant, stats are great, but it has to be team first,” Doull said during the match.

Earlier, Simon Duoll had taken a dig at Babar when New Zealand toured Pakistan for the test match series.

In light of the slow-moving nature of the New Zealand series and the flat wickets in Pakistan, former Kiwi cricketer Simon Doull made a startling statement. He asked if such pitches are demanded by Babar to improve his stats in test cricket.

“Where does that directive come from? Does that come from Babar who wants to bat on a road and improve his own stats?” Doull questioned. “Does it come from above him?” the co-commentator responded.
