Ravichandran Ashwin has thanked the Chennai Super Kings after his official return to the franchise after a decade. The experienced spin-bowling all-rounder was acquired by CSK for ₹9.75 crore during the IPL 2025 mega auction. His emotional homecoming comes after he played for several franchises, including the Rajasthan Royals, since leaving CSK in 2015.
A Nostalgic Return for R Ashwin
In a heartfelt video shared by CSK, Ashwin reflected on his time with the franchise. “They say life is a circle. I played for them from 2008 to 2015. I am always indebted to them,” he stated. He acknowledged that the lessons he learned at CSK have significantly contributed to his success in international cricket.
Ashwin also noted the nostalgia of being pursued by CSK during the auction, akin to how they fought for him back in 2011. “It was a trip down memory lane. It’s a very special feeling,” he added.
Excitement to Reunite with MS Dhoni
One of the highlights of Ashwin’s return is the opportunity to play alongside former captain MS Dhoni once again. “I am so glad to return to CSK. I am looking forward to playing in front of the ever-growing fandom,” Ashwin expressed. He also mentioned his eagerness to play under young captain Ruturaj Gaikwad.
Ashwin’s presence will be pivotal for CSK as they look to build a strong squad for the upcoming season. His experience and skill set are expected to complement the team’s dynamics perfectly.

Ashwin’s IPL Journey
Ashwin made his IPL debut for CSK in 2009 and was part of their title-winning campaigns in 2010 and 2011. Since then, he has represented various franchises, including the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiants, Punjab Kings, and Delhi Capitals. With 212 IPL appearances, he is among the most experienced players in the league, currently holding the position of joint-fifth highest wicket-taker with 180 wickets.
During his time away from CSK, Ashwin continued to excel, but his heart remained with the franchise that gave him his big break. “I have seen a lot of ‘Anbuden fans’ banners,” he recalled fondly, referencing the unwavering support from CSK fans throughout his career.
CSK’s Auction Strategy
CSK’s strategy during the auction focused on acquiring players suited for their home conditions at Chepauk, known for its slow and turning pitches. Besides Ashwin, they made significant purchases, including Afghanistan spinner Noor Ahmad for ₹10 crore and opening batsman Devon Conway for ₹6.25 crore.
The franchise retained its core players before the auction, ensuring they maintained a strong foundation while adding valuable talent like Ashwin.
