Recently, he revealed the reason for it. He said that he chose to retire due to a lack of motivation. He felt uninspired to return to domestic cricket and pursue a comeback to the Indian team.
Exceptional Career and Reason Behind Retirement:
In Indian cricket, an enormously talented left-handed opening batter like Shikhar Dhawan is rare. Right after making his debut in international cricket, he become one of the trustworthy openers of the Indian team in all formats. All over three formats, he has more than 10,000 runs and played some memorable innings for the team. But after December 2022, he was not seen in India’s jersey, and he announced his retirement in the last months.
After retiring from international cricket, he is currently participating in the ongoing Legends League Cricket. Fans are enjoying some thrilling performances by the star batter. Recently, he shares the reasons behind his retirement from international cricket.
While talking about this, Dhawan said, “I didn’t want to play domestic cricket, which I started playing at the age of 18 or 19 and I didn’t have that inspiration from inside to play that (form of) cricket.”

Later he added, “If I look back, the last two years of my cricketing career, I wasn’t playing much of international cricket and I was playing IPL to IPL, so I wasn’t playing much of cricket (overall).”
Satisfaction Over the Achieved Success:
Shikhar Dhawan excelled not only as a batter but also as a captain. He took on the role of India’s ODI skipper against Sri Lanka in June 2021, leading the team in 12 matches, securing seven victories and three losses. His IPL career was equally impressive, playing for several franchises. In 222 matches, he scored a remarkable 6769 runs, showcasing his talent. He is also the second-highest run-scorer of the IPL history.
While talking about this, he said, “I thought that, ‘alright, I’ve played enough, and I need to give it a break because I’m not playing that much cricket, so you lose the touch as well. I thought that continuing IPL and just coming up with two, three months of hard work won’t be enough for me to go and play.”
Later he added, “So that was the reason for me to just call it off, and yeah, I was very happy and satisfied and content with whatever I achieved in my career, and very, very grateful for everything.”
