The excitement is going up for the upcoming IPL season. The T20 fever in India already started to gear up. The auction of IPL 2024 will be held on December 19 in Dubai. All teams are doing the last-time checking. Experiments are always done in every season. In the last season, the ‘Impact Player’ rule was introduced. Former Indian player Wasim Jaffer commented on this rule.
What is an Impact Player?
The rules are created and denied every day in the cricket world. A lot of new rules were introduced in the IPL 2023. The ‘Impact Player’ rule was the most interesting one. The Impact player rule is a team can bring an Impact player at any point of an inning to replace any player from playing XI. As per the rules, a team can name 5 substitute players along with playing XI before the toss. Any one of these five players can be used as an Impact Player in the match.
The Impact Player rule was first introduced in India in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2022. An Impact Player can come at the start of the innings, at the fall of a wicket, when a batter retires, or at the end of an over. If a player gets injured, he can replaced by an Impact Player. If the Impact Player comes as a bowler at the fall of a wicket, he will not bowl the remaining balls of the over.
There are some other rules. The captain will nominate the Impact Player and he has to inform the on-field umpire before making the change. The Impact Player can bat and bowl full quota. Impact Player can not be used if the game is shortened to less than 10 overs per side.
Wasim Jaffer’s Words on Impact Player’s Rule:
The former Indian batter and the coach of Punjab Kings talked about the rule of Impact Player and shared his thoughts on this rule. He urged to remove this rule from the IPL. On his social media handle, he talked about this.
He said, “I think IPL needs to take away the impact player rule, as it’s not encouraging the all-rounders to bowl much, and lack of ARs and batters not bowling is a major area of concern for Indian cricket. Thoughts?”
