In a surprising move, India decided to give their star players, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, a well-deserved rest in the second ODI against West Indies at Bridgetown, Barbados. The hosts won the toss and opted to bowl, making two changes to their side in the hope of turning the tables after their five-wicket loss in the opener. Alzarri Joseph and Keacy Carty stepped in, replacing Rovman Powell and Dominic Drakes.
Hardik to lead the team
Stepping into Rohit Sharma’s shoes, the talented all-rounder Hardik Pandya led the team for the second outing, adding another feather to his cap. In the first ODI, Rohit had a rare opportunity to bat at No. 7, while the maestro Kohli wasn’t even needed on the crease as India comfortably chased down the modest target of 115 in just 22.5 overs on Thursday.
Hardik, who previously led India in an ODI earlier this March against Australia, expressed his preference to contribute with the bat this time. India, eyeing victory to seal the match, made two changes to the side, including Axar Patel and Sanju Samson. Samson, who last played an ODI in November 2022, has been striving to secure a spot in the playing XI of late. On the other hand, Axar Patel boasts more recent ODI game time, having last played against Australia in March.
India lead the series 1-0
With the series hanging in the balance, the second game holds significant importance for the West Indies, who find themselves trailing 1-0 after losing their last five home ODI series. The Caribbean squad is eager to bounce back with a resounding victory and level the three-match series, putting their best foot forward in front of the home crowd.
While Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli enjoy a well-deserved break, the rest of the Indian squad will look to seize the opportunity and make a resounding statement in their absence. West Indies, on the other hand, will leave no stone unturned in their quest to turn the tide in their favour and reinvigorate their home ODI campaign.
