Suryakumar Yadav, India’s dynamic T20 captain, has been ruled out of the opening round of the 2024-25 Duleep Trophy due to a hand injury. The injury occurred during a pre-season match for Mumbai at the Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament held in Coimbatore. As the tournament prepares to kick off on September 5, Suryakumar’s absence is a significant blow to Team C, which he was set to represent against Team D in Ananthapur.
Injury Details
Suryakumar sustained the injury while fielding on the third day of the match against the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) XI. He did not bat in the second innings as a precautionary measure, with the Mumbai team management prioritizing his health ahead of the Duleep Trophy. Currently, he is at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru for a routine assessment and recovery process.
The Duleep Trophy serves as a crucial platform for players aiming to secure spots in the national Test squad, especially with India set to play ten Test matches over the next five months. The first series is against Bangladesh, commencing on September 19 in Chennai. Suryakumar’s hopes of making a Test comeback have been dashed for now, as he has not played first-class cricket in over a year. His only Test appearance was against Australia in February 2023, where he scored just eight runs.

Suryakumar’s absence is compounded by the fact that fast bowlers Mohammed Siraj and Umran Malik have also been ruled out of the opening round due to illness. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that Navdeep Saini and Gaurav Yadav will replace Siraj and Malik in their respective squads. This reshuffling comes at a critical time as teams prepare for the competitive matches ahead.
Despite this setback, Suryakumar remains optimistic about his future in red-ball cricket.
