India’s World Cup Champions to Return Home on Special Arranged Flight

Led by Rohit Sharma, the Indian cricket team will reach home on Wednesday night (IST) after a two-day delay in Barbados due to Hurricane Beryl, a severe category 4 storm that shut down the island’s airport. The team was in Barbados celebrating their T20 World Cup win. Despite the disruption, they stayed safe, reflecting on their success and building team unity. As conditions improve, they are getting ready to depart and reunite with their excited fans in India.

India defeated South Africa by seven runs in an exciting final at the Kensington Oval, finally clinching their first World Cup title in 13 years on Saturday, June 29. Since then, the Indian cricketers, their support staff, families, and BCCI officials, including secretary Jay Shah, have been eagerly waiting for Hurricane Beryl to pass and for the airports to resume operations.

They have been stuck in Barbados, hoping for safe conditions to return home after celebrating their hard-earned victory. Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley anticipates that the airport closure will soon be lifted, estimating it could reopen within the “next six to 12 hours.” She shared this update around 4 am (IST) on Tuesday.

Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley said, “ We hope, and we’re working towards later today. I don’t want to speak in advance of it, but I’ve literally been in touch with the airport personnel and they’re doing their last checks now and we want to resume to normal operations as a matter of urgency. There are a number of people who were due to leave yet last night late or today or tomorrow morning. And we want to make sure that we can facilitate those persons, so I would anticipate that within the next six to 12 hours that the airport will be open.”

If the Barbados airport reopens by 4-5 pm on Tuesday (local time), the Indian contingent, consisting of nearly 70 members, plans to depart on a charter flight. They are scheduled to leave Bridgetown at 6 pm (local time) and are expected to arrive in Delhi on Wednesday at 7.45 pm (IST), as per a source. Prime Minister Narendra Modi intends to honor the players later, although the exact timing of the event has not been confirmed yet.
