India’s World Cup Winning Fast Bowler to Feature in Lanka Premier League

Munaf Patel will be part of the inaugural edition of the Lanka Premier League starting on November 26. Patel has been roped in by Kandy Tuskers for the LPL 2020 as revealed by their official Twitter handle on Tuesday.

Patel to join Pathan

The 37-year-old Munaf Patel played 13 Test matches, 70 ODIs, and three ODIs and was part of Team India’s 2011 World Cup-winning team. He will be joining former India teammate Irfan Pathan in the tournament. On Tuesday the LPL wrote on their official Twitter handle, “Former India fast bowler Munaf Patel has signed a contract to @KandyTuskers.” Earlier Kandy Tuskers had welcomed Irfan Pathan in the team saying, “Welcoming the all-rounder, Kandy franchise owner and Bollywood actor Sohail Khan said, “Irfan’s inclusion will not only add to the firepower of the squad but his experience will be a huge asset to the team.”

Uncertainty looms

The release also informed that Sri Lanka’s T20 skipper Lasith Malinga who was supposed to be the leading pace attack of Galle Gladiators is unsure of playing the league. “He has not been able to train for quite some time and is a little hesitant. We are persuading him to play. He is a celebrity and we don’t want to miss him,” team owner Nadeem Omar said. On the other hands, Kandy Tuskers are also not sure about Chris Gayle joining the league according to a report on ESPNcricinfo. “There is also uncertainty about Chris Gayle’s involvement in the league … Gayle is still negotiating the terms of his contract with the Tuskers.”

Sarfaraz Ahmed who was set to lead the Gladiators would not play the league as he would be representing Pakistan for the New Zealand tour. The report informed about the player’s availability for Jaffna Stallions as well. “Stallions had also announced that batsmen Ravi Bopara and Shoaib Malik would be part of their squad, but their involvement is now also uncertain,” the report said.
