IPL 2020: NADA Might Outsource Sample Collection

After coming under NADA’s ambit from the third quarter of 2019, this will be the first that they will be handling sample collection during the Indian Premier League. But given the high cost of handling the exercise, NADA might have to outsource the task.

What’s the story?

This year of IPL will see NADA (National Anti-Doping Agency) handling the sample collection for the first time. But since the league is scheduled to be held from September 19 to November 8 in the UAE, National Anti-Doping Agency might have to outsource the task. In this case, the National Anti-Doping Organization which is the agency in the USE will be collecting the sample and sending it to the WADA-accredited laboratory in Doha. This is the most cost-effective and convenient option as well. “This is the most convenient option in terms of checking the cost and sample transportation. NADA foots the bill which will be much lower,” a source opined. The other option is to send a few Dope Control Officers to the UAE at its own cost. This will be a costly option and NADA have to be cautious about picking up the second one.

Till the 2019 IPL, BCCI used to bear the cost of sample collection and testing with the World Anti-Doping Agency-approved IDTM in charge. The IDTM has done the job for the last 12 seasons of the Indian Premier League.

Nothing disclosed by officials yet

While speaking about the same, a BCCI official told PTI, “It is expected that the approved schedule will be out next week and once we send it to NADA, they can take a call. It’s completely their call as they will have to bear the cost of sample collection and transportation.” Post this the PTI approached NADA DG Navin Agarwal to get his reaction on the issue. He did not want to go into details and said that NADA would be sharing everything soon. “We will let you know once we decide on the issue”.
