IPL 2021 Likely to Be Dhoni’s Last Season as Player

MS Dhoni almost confirmed about his future in IPL with Chennai Super Kings. Today ahead of CSK’s match against Punjab Kings, he was asked about his future by toss presenter. He spoke about a lot of uncertainties.

During the last game of Chennai Super Kings against Punjab Kings, Dhoni was asked about his future by the toss presenter Danny Morrison. Dhoni replied that he would be donning the yellow jersey but not sure about playing again. “You’ll see me in yellow next season but whether I’ll be playing for CSK you never know.” He also added, “There are a lot of uncertainties coming up, two new teams are coming, we don’t know what the retention rules are and so on.”

So this is almost clear that IPL 2021 will be Dhoni’s last season as a player. On the other hand, Dhoni also hinted about working as part of the coaching staff in Chennai Super Kings. Days ahead he had said that he would play his farewell match in Chennai. Following the same, a CSK official spoke about retaining Dhoni in next season.

The IPL will expand to a ten-team tournament next season. A mega auction before that will take place and the franchises can retain a handful of players. Dhoni’s form since IPL 2020 has not been good enough and hence if CSK want to retain him, it makes sense only for captaincy. He has been one of the most successful IPL captains leading CSK to three titles. However, it seems that Dhoni would move to a role of a coach or mentor for CSK next season. The fans will be disappointed for not being able to give him a farewell in Chennai but would love to see his association with CSK for next few years.
