It was yet another mediocre IPL season for Punjab Kings in 2020. Ahead of the mini-auction for IPL 2021 they had released a host of their big stars. With a big purse, Punjab Kings were seen bidding for a number of players and managing to spend crores on nine of them.
Punjab Kings spent most of their money on two Australian fast bowlers. They had suffered with their death bowling last year and clearly their auction strategy was to address the issue. Jhye Richardson and Riley Meredith are two such inclusion who should be able to strengthen that area. They invested RS 22 Crore on them as Richardson was purchased for Rs. 14 Crore and Meredith for Rs. 8 Crore. In 67 T20 matches so far, Richardson has taken 82 wickets at an economy rate of 7.92. He was the highest wicket taker in last Big Bash League with 29 wickets in 17 games at an economy of 7.69 and average of 16.31. Meredith took 16 wickets in 13 matches at an average of 7.82. Both are famous for their pace and death bowling control.

Punjab Kings got on-board Dawid Malan, Fabian Allen, Moises Henriques as their other overseas buys. The list of their released players gave a hint on how the franchise had a plan of revamping the core overseas strength. Dawid Malan is currently topping the ICC T20I Men’s Rankings list. There should never be any doubt especially while he is available for just Rs. 1.5 Crore. Malan’s good form is a plus point too in the middle-order. Fabian Allen is a good spin bowling late order batting option for them. The Jamaican national will be useful with his slow left-arm orthodox bowling and hard hitting. Punjab Kings bought experienced Moises Henriques for Rs 4.2 crore as a replacement for James Neesham.
Their biggest Indian buy was Shahrukh Khan for Rs 5.25 Crore. The Tamil Nadu youngster has been able to make a reputation in Indian domestic cricket as a power hitter at the death and Punjab Kings will have big hopes from him. He is coming off a successful Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and should find himself in the eleven. The other Indian buys for the KL Rahul-led side included experienced allrounder Jalaj Saxena, spinner Saurabh Kumar, and allrounder Utkarsh Singh. None of them are sure starter at this point but will provide handy back up option for Punjab Kings to fall back on.
