Ahead of Chennai’s second of the IPL 2021 against Punjab, former India opener Gautam Gambhir suggested the batting position for MS Dhoni. He opined that Dhoni should bat at higher in the order.
Gambhir opines on Dhoni
Former Indian cricket team member Gautam Gambhir believes that as a captain MS Dhoni should bat at higher position instead of coming at No 7. Dhoni came out to bat at No 7 during Chennai’s tournament opener against Delhi capitals. He was gone for a duck. Talking about Dhoni’s batting, Gambhir hence opined, “MS Dhoni should be batting higher, that’s what matters because ultimately people should start leading from the front,” Gambhir, who led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title twice, said on Star Sports.
Gambhir explained how a leader needs to lead from the front. This is why Dhoni should come early during Chennai’s batting. “We keep mentioning this thing that a leader needs to lead from the front. You can’t be leading, when you’re batting at number seven.”
Gambhir explains
Chennai Super Kings batting was fine in their first match but they lacked in the bowling. They failed to stop the Capitals from chasing down the target successfully. Gambhir thinks that Chennai have issue in the bowling however, Dhoni’s appearance higher up the order would be better overall.
“Yes, there are issues in their bowling line up. Plus, he is not the MS Dhoni, which he used to be probably four or five years back, where he could just come in and start taking on the bowlers from the word go. For me, I think he needs to bat at number four or five. Nothing below that,” said Gambhir. CSK will be taking on Punjab Kings in their second match of the season on Friday in Mumbai. Punjab are coming from a win whereas for the Chennai side it is important to register tehir maiden win of the season.
