IPL 2024 Retention Rules Expected to be Announced by Early September

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to reveal the retention rules for the 2024 season by early September, according to reports. As the league gears up for another thrilling season, the announcement is eagerly awaited by the franchises, players, and fans alike.

The retention policy is an essential aspect of the IPL, as it determines which players franchises can retain from their current squads. It significantly impacts team dynamics and can be the difference between a strong or weak lineup in the upcoming season. With the league’s popularity soaring higher every year, the stakes have never been higher for teams to get their retention strategy spot on.

Impact on Franchises

Franchises are anxiously waiting for the official rules to finalise their strategies. The retention rules will determine how many players a team can retain and how much of their salary cap will be tied up in those retention bonuses. This is especially crucial for teams with several star players, as they will need to make tough decisions about who to keep and who to release.

Retention Speculations

As IPL retention discussions heat up, Lucknow Super Giants captain KL Rahul met with franchise owner Sanjiv Goenka in Kolkata. The meeting, held on August 26, 2024, lasted around an hour and was the first formal interaction between Rahul and Goenka

As of August 1, 2024, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are considering retaining the following players for the 2025 IPL season: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, Matheesha Pathirana, Shivam Dube, and Devon Conway. If the retention limit is five or six players, MS Dhoni could also be retained for another season

RCB is expected to retain three to four key players. Virat Kohli is a top candidate due to his impressive performance as the season’s top scorer and his crucial role in India‘s T20 World Cup win. Mohammed Siraj, RCB’s leading bowler with 15 wickets despite a tough season, and Rajat Patidar, who scored nearly 400 runs with a strike rate over 170, are also strong retention candidates. Australian all-rounder Cameron Green, who contributed over 250 runs and 10 wickets in his debut season, could be retained for his versatile skills.
