IPL 2025 Auction Shocker: Uncapped Retention Rule, 2-Season Ban for Withdrawals, and Overseas Players’ Mega Auction Rule

The wait is over finally. The upcoming IPL 2025 is set to see a mega auction. Before that, a lot of buzz was going over the retention rule. Finally, BCCI has announced the new rules before the upcoming IPL season. Some brainstorming rules have come out of the announcement. Under the new retention rules, any player who withdraws after being selected will face a ban for two IPL seasons. Apart from this, some other rules are making the fans crazy.

One Uncapped Player Retention is Must:

IPL teams must keep at least one uncapped player among their six retentions for the 2025 season. Each franchise has the option to retain up to six players, and the right-to-match option has returned for the auction. This new retention policy was announced on Saturday evening.

Of the six players retained, at least one must be an uncapped Indian talent. The other five spots can be filled by either Indian or overseas players. Teams can choose to retain their players through direct retention, a mix of direct retention and RTM, or solely through the RTM method. This strategy aims to encourage the inclusion of emerging local talent in the league.

Overseas Players Need to Participate in Mega Auction:

BCCI made another brainstorming move regarding foreign players’ involvement into the IPL mega auctions. The BCCI has introduced a new rule stating that overseas players must register for the Mega Auction to be eligible for next year’s mini-auction. If they fail to register, they will be ineligible to participate in the upcoming auction. This directive aims to streamline the selection process and ensure all players are accounted for.

In recent years, many overseas players have preferred registering for the mini-auction due to the higher salary offers. However, this new policy emphasizes the importance of the Mega Auction and encourages players to participate in it. The BCCI hopes that making registration mandatory, will enhance the competitiveness and overall quality of the auctions moving forward.

In the statement, BCCI said, “Any Overseas Player will have to register for the Big Auction. In case the overseas player doesn’t register, then he will be ineligible to register in the following year’s player auction.”

BCCI to Ban Foreign Players If They Withdraw Names:

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has announced a two-year ban for overseas players who decline to participate in the Indian Premier League after being selected in the auction. This decision aims to address a recurring issue where franchises invest significant amounts in renowned international players, only to have them withdraw for various reasons, such as injuries or commitments to their national teams.

These last-minute withdrawals often leave teams in a difficult position, scrambling to find suitable replacements within a limited timeframe. The new policy seeks to ensure that players honor their commitments, which will help franchises maintain stability and build stronger teams for the tournament

In the statement, BCCI said, “Any player who registers in the player auction and after getting picked at the auction, makes himself unavailable before the start of the season, will get banned from participating in the tournament and player auction for 2 Seasons.”
