IPL Retention Announcement Expected Soon as GC Meets Today

The much-anticipated announcement regarding player retention for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season is expected soon, as the IPL Governing Council (GC) is set to meet today ,September 28 in Bengaluru.

Expected Number of Retentions

The 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL 18), also known as TATA IPL 2025, will be the 18th season of the popular cricket tournament. Ten teams will participate, and the tournament will take place in India.

Kolkata Knight Riders are the defending champions, having won their third title by defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad in the previous season.

The retention process will soon begin, shaping the future of star cricketers. Some players will stay with their current teams, while others may join new teams in the latest IPL edition.

One of the key outcomes of today’s meeting is the confirmation of the number of player retention allowed for each IPL team.

Sources suggest the number could range from 2 to 8, though a more likely figure is 5 to 6 players, including the Right to Match (RTM) option.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had earlier met with IPL team owners in July to discuss the retention rules and gather their feedback.

Mega-Auction Date and Venue

Another critical decision expected during the GC meeting is the date and venue for the IPL mega-auction.

Current reports suggest that the auction could be scheduled for the end of November, with a potential international venue.

Saudi Arabia has reportedly shown interest in hosting the event, which could mark a significant development in IPL history if the GC agrees to hold the auction in Riyadh.

The IPL GC meeting comes after notices were sent to its members on Friday evening.

While the retention decision is the key focus, the GC will also deliberate on other important matters, such as the date and venue of the IPL mega-auction, which is rumoured to be held in late November.

The meeting is scheduled to take place at the Four Seasons Hotel at 11:30 AM.

The decision on retention numbers, a crucial policy for teams, is expected to be made within the next 24 hours, though it may first be discussed in the general body meeting on Sunday.
