In the second ICC T20 World Cup match at Guyana’s Providence Stadium, Papua New Guinea and West Indies faced off in an exciting duel.
The West Indies chose to bowl first, after winning the toss. The result was an impressive first innings in which PNG scored 136/8 against a much more experienced opponent.
In 19 overs, West Indies scored 137/5, which was enough to win the match by 5 wickets. Despite PNG bowlers and fielders trying their best, West Indies managed to snatch 2 points by winning today’s game.
“It’s a 10-15 too much” Rovman Powell on PNG’s score
Addressing the fans at the post match ceremony, West Indies Captain Rovman Powell acknowledged the team’s good performance in today’s game.
Powell also admitted that PNG managed to score 10-15 extra runs in today’s match, than West Indies had expected them to.
“Their plans were simple, and they play some good cricket. It’s important to get two points, and that’s what we did. It’s 10-15 too much (PNG’s total).” Rovman said
“As a bowling group, that’s what we want to tighten up. Since I turned captain, 70-80 percent team has been playing together.” he added.
“Weren’t up to the straps to the level we want to play. We were at 60-70 percent. Hopefully we can correct that for the second game.” Powell concluded.
Roston Chase becomes POTM
After an impressive performance in today’s game, West Indies bowler Roston Chase has been rightfully declared as the Player Of The Match.
Chase gave away 26 runs in 4 overs with an economy rate of 6.5. He also went on to take a catch on Alzarri Joseph‘s ball, hence taking away PNG Captain Assad Vala’s wicket.
“Starting from the bowling effort, he bowled very well (talking about Chase). And then towards the end, to hold his composure in a pressure game in WC, it’s pleasing for us.” WI Captain Rovman Powell said.
“I have worked hard, had a preparation camp in Antigua and brought that confidence into the game. We don’t want to take any team lightly, they (PNG) are here which means they are deserving, we want to play the same way we would play India or Australia.” Roston said after today’s match.
West Indies will now be looking forward to a match against Uganda on 9 June, as the 18th match for the T20 World Cup 2024
