It’s The Coach who Needs to Move on: Anil Kumble Recalling his Moments as Indian National Cricket Team’s Coach

Former India spinner Anil Kumble said he had enjoyed working with the Indian National cricket team as coach. Although Kumble’s tenure had ended in a controversial manner, the man in question does not have any regret for serving the role.

Anil Kumble on being India’s coach

In a recent Instagram LIVE session with Pommie Mbangwa on an Instagram live session, Anil Kumble was asked about his experience as an Indian National cricket team’s coach. During Kumble’s coaching Indian team has reached to the top spot of ICC Test rankings and also the Champions Trophy Final. Reportedly he had a rift with Virat Kohli, the skipper but in the interview, Kumble told how he had enjoyed being the coach.

“I was very happy that I took up that role [India coach]. It was great, the one year I spent with the Indian team was really fantastic. “Anil Kumble added, “Having been with great performers and again being a part of the Indian dressing room is a great feeling.”

Anil Kumble, one of the leading spinners of all time further recalled that the end could have better but he was happy with his contributions. “We did really well in that one year period. I was really happy that there were some contributions made and there are no regrets. I was happy moving on from there as well. I know the end could have been better but then that’s fine.” India’s former Test captain opined, “As a coach, you realise, when it’s time to move on, it’s the coach who needs to move on. I was really happy I played a significant role in that one year.”

“Looking forward to coach Punjab”

Anil Kumble had his stints in the Indian Premier League as the mentor of Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians. Then he decided to take a break which eventually saw him joining the Indian National cricket team as the head coach. Anil Kumble recalled, “When I returned I saw an ad calling for the coach for the Indian team. I then sort of asked around the family, I asked my wife what she thought. She said ‘yeah, give it a go.’” Kumble continued, “I got that job. It was because the sort of comfort I had with my family and kids, I took it up.”

The 13th season of Indian Premier League will again see Anil Kumble at the dugout and this time for Kings XI Punjab. He is the head coach of the Punjab based franchise and looking forward to the same. “I am now looking forward to being a part of Kings XI team. Over the 12 years, Kings have been able to consistently do well. So whenever the IPL happens, I am looking forward to being part of the dressing room again.”
