The defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders are yet to announce their captain for IPL 2025. Ahead of the IPL 2025 season, KKR had released their captain Shreyas Iyer. Amid speculation about Ajinkya Rahane being a strong contender, batting all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer has voiced his aspiration to take on the leadership role. Iyer has been a part of the KKR camp since 2021.
“I Want to Be a Leader in the Dressing Room”: Venkatesh
Speaking to the Indian Express, Venkatesh Shared his two thoughts on the captaincy role. He said that he would gladly accept the role if the opportunity comes.
“I’ve always maintained that I want to be a leader in any set-up that I walk into, be it Madhya Pradesh, an IPL team, or even the Indian team. Being a leader, you want to contribute with your ideas and suggestions. You don’t really need the captaincy tag for that. So I always want to be a leader in the dressing room. And if captaincy comes my way, it will be an honour to lead such a reputed franchise. Let’s see what’s in store for me,” he said.
Reports indicate that Ajinkya Rahane may be a favourite for the captaincy. Rahane was recently signed by the KKR at the IPL 2025 Auction. Rahane has vast leadership experience in the IPL. He has even captained Team India on multiple occasions. However, Venkatesh has been associated with the KKR core for a while.
Venkatesh Iyer On Handling a Hefty Price Tag
The Kolkata Knight Riders went all in for Venkatesh Iyer during the IPL 2025 Auction. He was bought for a huge price of Rs. 23.75 crores.
“It is a big jump from where I was yesterday to where I will be in the future, in terms of bank balance. I’d be lying if I said there won’t be any pressure of the price tag. We’re living in a world where social media is very active, and people are always talking about you.”, Iyer said.
“But once the IPL starts, it doesn’t matter if you were picked for ₹20 lakh or ₹20 crore. You are part of a team, and there’ll be a certain role given to you. It’s your duty to try and fulfill that role,” the Madhya Pradesh all-rounder added.
