Jason Gillespie to Coach Pakistan in Australia After Kirsten Resigns Announced PCB

Gary Kirsten, the head coach for Pakistan’s ODI and T20I teams, has officially stepped down from his role, only six months after his appointment in April 2024. The news comes just days before Pakistan’s white-ball tour of Australia, scheduled for early November. Kirsten’s resignation marks a swift end to his contract, originally set to span two years, during a crucial time in Pakistan’s cricket calendar.

Kirsten’s Tenure and Early Exit from T20 World Cup

Kirsten, a former South African cricketer and experienced coach, joined Pakistan with high expectations, bringing extensive experience from his successful stints with India and South Africa.

His primary assignment was to guide Pakistan through the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, held in the West Indies and USA.

However, Pakistan’s campaign was cut short after group-stage losses to India and the USA.

This early exit from the tournament intensified scrutiny on both the players and the coaching staff, ultimately contributing to Kirsten’s decision to step down.

Beyond the T20 World Cup, Kirsten was tasked with preparing Pakistan for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, which Pakistan will host after nearly three decades.

With Kirsten’s departure, Jason Gillespie, the team’s Test coach, will temporarily take over the white-ball coaching duties for the upcoming tour.

Jason Gillespie Takes Over for Australia Tour

Jason Gillespie, known for his successful Test tenure with Pakistan, has now been assigned as the interim white-ball coach for the Australia tour.

Gillespie joined the coaching staff alongside Kirsten and recently led Pakistan to a significant Test series victory over England, marking their first home series win since 2021.

As the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed, Gillespie’s immediate focus will be the Australian white-ball series beginning November 4, which will serve as a test for his adaptability in the shorter formats.

Pakistan will play a white-ball series in Zimbabwe following their Australia tour. The first group of players will depart for Melbourne on October 28, with the remaining squad to join them on October 29.

PCB’s recent announcement also includes an updated squad list, with new captain and vice-captain appointments.
