Former England captain Joe Root shared his perspective on the Jonny Bairstow-Alex Carey stumping incident during last year’s Ashes series at home, noting that the stumping was legal under cricket rules. He emphasized the importance of player awareness, suggesting that such situations require vigilance on the field. Root’s view highlights the critical role of understanding and adhering to the laws of the game, implying that as players, being alert to such possibilities is crucial to avoid contentious moments like this in cricket matches.
Jonny Bairstow-Alex Carey Stumping Controversy During the Ashes 2023:
In the second Test of the Ashes series last July, Jonny Bairstow was stumped by wicketkeeper Alex Carey for just 10 runs during England’s pursuit of 371. Bairstow, stepping out of his crease, assumed the ball was dead after ducking it. Seizing the opportunity, Carey quickly stumped him. This dismissal was crucial as England fell short at 327 runs, leading to a 2-0 series deficit for Australia.
On the fourth day of the match, the stumping became a major controversy in recent Ashes history. Afterward, Australian team members faced criticism from Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) members in Lord’s Stadium’s Long Room during lunch. Endless debates ensued on the ‘Spirit of Cricket,’ with fans and experts suggesting Bairstow should have been warned or not dismissed. However, the stumping was deemed legal under cricket laws.
Joe Root’s Take on This Controversial Stumping:
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) released their documentary ‘The Ashes 2023 Our Take’ in response to Australia’s Prime Video series ‘The Test Season Three’. Both documentaries explore the events of the Ashes 2023, each offering their respective viewpoints on key issues, including the controversial incidents from the series.
Joe Root said, “Initially I was quite angry, but I think when you are involved in the game it is very difficult to put yourself in the other position. So I would like to say I would have dealt with it differently (than Australia), but I could very easily have done the same thing. Jonny will hate me saying this, but if you stay in your crease you can’t get given out can you? At the end of the day it is within the laws of the game. You should be aware as a player.”
Root praised Ben Stokes for his leadership as England rallied to a 2-2 series draw after the controversy. The run out sparked England’s resurgence, leading to convincing wins in the third and fifth Tests. The team had fought hard against Australia throughout, culminating in a balanced series outcome. England had a chance to win the fourth Test in Manchester if rain had yet to interrupt play. Despite Australia retaining the Ashes urn with a series draw, they missed the opportunity to win a series in England for the first time since 2001.
He concluded, “It deserved more than for us to come out on the wrong end of that (Lord’s) result. For England’s captain to show us this is how we play our cricket regardless of the situation, regardless of what people might have said in the first innings, how we got dismissed, reckless, careless, no thought behind it. It was a really powerful moment for us as a team and the rest of the series as well.”
