It is almost time for ODI World Cup 2023. Just a few days later, the biggest competition will take place in India. But before that, India will play a three-match ODI series against Australia on home soil. The squad has already been announced on Monday. The series will begin on September 22. Those three matches will be played in Mohali, Rajkot and Indore.
Before the series, most importantly before the World Cup, there was an injury blow in India camp. In the match against Bangladesh, Axar Patel sustained an injury. Despite that fact, he didn’t play in the final. Another injury update was received in the India Cup in the middle of the Asia Cup. Shreyas Iyer sustained a back spasm in the middle of the tournament.
Iyer’s injury:
Shreyas Iyer was out of cricket for seven months due to a back injury. He had to go under the knife to recover from that. After recovering from that injury, Iyer was selected for the Asia Cup and the World Cup squad.
Because of his injury, he missed big tournaments like IPL and the World Test Championship final. He has made a comeback for India through the Asia Cup. In the match against Pakistan in the group stage, he made a comeback. But after that, he sustained a back spasm. Because of that, he didn’t see in other games of the tournament. The BCCI medical team said it is not a big one. Team management is hopeful about his recovery before the tournament. Before the big stage, Iyer will play the three-match series against Australia.
Gambhir’s comment on Shreyas’s injury:
In an interaction with the media, Gambhir said,” It is a concern. You were out for such a lengthy time and then you return for the Asia Cup, play one match, and then again become unfit. I don’t think after this team management will pick up him for such a big tournament. You will see in the coming days that Iyer won’t be part of the World Cup squad and someone will be replacing him.” Gambhir’s saying it is clear that he is not pleased with Iyer’s back-to-back injury.
Kapil Dev backed Iyer:
In another interaction with media Kapil Dev backed Shreyas before the big tournament. He said,” I am nobody to answer that. The selectors are doing their job. It is very easy to raise fingers at one player.” he backed Iyer for the biggest tournament of cricket. He is hopeful about Iyer’s recovery and his contribution on the big stage.
However, Iyer has been picked for the ODI series against Australia. Selectors are hoping for the best for his recovery. They are believing in Shreyas’s ability before the series.
