The Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) is on the lookout for a new head coach for the upcoming 2024-25 domestic season, following the resignation of M. Venkataramana due to personal reasons. Reports indicate that KCA has received over ten applications for the role, one of which comes from former Pakistan head coach Shaun Tait.
Tait, a fast bowler who was part of the Australian squad that won the 2007 ODI World Cup, has previously served as the bowling coach for Pakistan and is known for his raw pace and wicket-taking ability. Throughout his international career, Tait played three Test matches, 35 ODIs, and 21 T20Is, claiming a total of 95 wickets.
Interestingly, Tait is also in contention for the head coach position of the Punjab cricket team, which has garnered over 45 applicants. The Punjab Cricket Association noted that among the notable candidates are former India opener Wasim Jaffer and Tait himself, with an announcement expected next week.
Kerala’s cricket team finished fourth in Elite Group B during the last Ranji Trophy season, failing to qualify for the quarterfinals. Despite their efforts, Kerala has yet to secure a Ranji Trophy title, a goal they hope to achieve under new leadership.
The 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season is set to commence on October 11, with the final scheduled for February 26. Mumbai enters as the defending champions, having claimed their record-extending 42nd title earlier this year.
As the Indian domestic season approaches, which will kick off with the Duleep Trophy in early September, KCA aims to finalize their coaching staff to prepare for the challenges ahead.
