Legendary Sri Lankan cricketer Kumar Sangakkara has voiced his opinion on the frontrunners for the upcoming 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup, scheduled to be held in India from October 5 to November 19. Sangakkara believes that England and India are the teams to watch in the tournament.
Sangakarra said
Sangakkara’s assessment is based on his observation of Sri Lanka’s performance in the ongoing Asia Cup, where they have demonstrated strong potential by reaching the Asia Cup final after defeating Pakistan in a thrilling game.
He stated, “I think England and India are going to be top favorites. I saw Sri Lanka play the last game and how they played throughout the Asia Cup, so they could be challenging for a playoff position once you’re in the playoffs, you’re a game away. You have a good day, you could be in the final,” as quoted by Sky Sports.
Eoin Morgan, the former England captain, shared a similar sentiment, emphasizing India’s favorable position due to the fitness of Hardik Pandya. Pandya, known for his all-round abilities, has demonstrated exceptional bowling skills during the Asia Cup. Morgan remarked, “The fitness level of Hardik Pandya, his ability to bowl…Having Hardik Pandya fit and being able to bowl five and six overs of quality bowling really does, in my eyes, make them probably favorites.”
India has already announced a 15-man provisional squad for the ODI World Cup, led by Rohit Sharma as captain and Hardik Pandya as vice-captain. However, the final squad is yet to be confirmed.
With the World Cup approaching, cricket fans around the world are eagerly anticipating the clash of the titans as England and India strive to secure the coveted title. The tournament promises to deliver thrilling matches and unforgettable moments for fans and players alike.
