South Africa’s young pace sensation, Kwena Maphaka, has been making headlines both on and off the field. The 18-year-old, who recently made his international debut for the Proteas, has revealed how he is balancing his cricket career with his academic responsibilities. Maphaka, currently on tour with the South African cricket team in the West Indies, has been preparing for his school prelims amidst his cricket commitments.
A Promising Start to an International Career
Kwena Maphaka became the highest wicket-taker in the Under-19 World Cup earlier this year, claiming 21 wickets in just six games. His outstanding performance earned him a spot in the national team, making his debut in the first T20I against the West Indies on August 23. Despite a challenging start, where he bowled 9.5 overs across three matches and took just one wicket, Maphaka has shown great potential.
Juggling Cricket and Studies
Maphaka, who is still a student, spoke about his commitment to both his studies and cricket. “When I go home, it’s into prelims again. I have been studying on tour, unfortunately. It’s going to be a little bit of studying and a little bit of work. After prelims, it’s the finals and then done with school,” Maphaka shared.

Youngest South African International Cricketer
Making his debut at such a young age, Maphaka became the youngest player to represent South Africa in international cricket. He expressed his pride in this achievement, saying, “Being the youngest player to represent South Africa is a privilege and it’s a great honor. It’s something that I’m going to hold dear to my heart for a very long time.”
Future Prospects
Despite a tough start to his international career, the Proteas are likely to keep a close eye on Maphaka. The upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan in September could be an opportunity for him to further showcase his talent. “It’s an amazing feeling, something I’ve been dreaming about my whole life to represent the Proteas. To be the youngest to do it is the cherry on top of the cake,” Maphaka added.
