Lance Morris Eyes Sheffield Shield Return After Battling Frustrating Injury

Australian fast bowler Lance Morris is hopeful of making an early return to the Sheffield Shield after a frustrating period of rehabilitation from a back injury. The 26-year-old, known for his blistering pace, has been sidelined since February when he suffered a side strain during an ODI against West Indies. Despite the setback, Morris has been cautiously optimistic, working through a slow recovery process and preparing to play in Australia‘s domestic 50-over competition before transitioning to red-ball cricket.

In an interview with ESPNcricinfo, Morris shared the challenges of recovering from an unusual injury that lacked the typical signs of a stress fracture, which added to the confusion. However, after regular check-ups and careful rehabilitation, Morris is now on the path to full fitness.

Injury Recovery and Return to Domestic Cricket

Morris admitted that the road to recovery had been frustrating, especially since he didn’t experience any back pain while bowling.

His recovery process included eight weeks without skills training, but he maintained his fitness through running and gym sessions.

He is now preparing to return in the domestic 50-over competition starting later this month, with hopes of making his Sheffield Shield comeback soon after.

Morris is expected to play one of the opening white-ball games for Western Australia on September 22 or 24.

His ultimate goal is to be fit for the start of the Sheffield Shield season, which kicks off on October 8. “All going well, I should be available for round one or round two,” he said, eager to regain his form.

Test Prospects and Future Opportunities

As Australia prepares for its upcoming Test series against India, Morris could be a vital addition to the pace attack, especially with concerns about the depth behind key bowlers like Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood.

Despite these opportunities, Morris remains focused on staying fit and available for selection.

“I have no expectations at all,” he said about his Test prospects. “But if the opportunity arises, hopefully I can jump on it with both hands.”
