Lanka Premier League 2024 Unveils ‘Power-Blast’ Rule for Thrilling Death Overs

In the cricket world, T20 cricket has a different kind of fanbase. Apart from the International T20s, the cricket-playing nation has started its own T20 leagues. Unlike that, Sri Lanka has also started their own T20 league named Lanka Premier League. As the fifth edition of the tournament will kick start in July, a new rule has been added to that. In this edition, fans will experience the “Power Blast” over.

What is the “Power Blast” Over Rule?

The 2024 edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) will introduce an exciting new rule: two additional powerplay overs, called “power-blast” overs, during the 16th and 17th overs of each completed innings. During these overs, only four fielders will be allowed outside the 30-yard circle, adding a new strategic element to the game.

This is in addition to the standard powerplay in the first six overs, where only two fielders can be positioned outside the circle. Apart from the designated power-blast overs, the usual fielding restrictions apply, allowing a maximum of five fielders in the outfield.

Statement by the Board and the Upcoming Season:

While introducing the New Rule, the Sri Lankan Cricket Board gave a statement. The statement said, “We decided to bring this innovation in order to create further excitement for the league, which is growing year by year. This new introduction is sure to generate a lot of excitement among the fans, and the teams will need to strategise effectively to make the most of this period.’

The 2024 Lanka Premier League (LPL), scheduled from July 1 to 21, marks the fifth edition of the tournament. It will feature 20 league matches among five franchises, followed by three playoffs and the final. During the league stage, each team will play against every other team twice. The top four teams will advance to the playoffs, culminating in the final match to determine the champion.

The 2024 LPL will coincide significantly with the USA’s Major League Cricket. The LPL 2024 auction had 420 cricketers registered. Pathirana secured the highest bid, while Isuru Udana became the second-highest paid with a USD 100,000 contract with Galle Marvels. The tournament will also showcase stars like Shadab Khan, Glenn Philips, Noor Ahmed, Azmatullah Omarzai, Kyle Mayers, among others.
