The Netherlands are officially out of the running for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 as they finish up with their last match of the group stage. Netherlands is placed at number 4 on the Group D points table after losing their last match against Sri Lanka by a massive 83-run gap. Despite losing the match, Sybrand Engelbrecht’s athletic catch goes viral in NED vs SL
Netherlands won the toss and opted to bowl first, followed by an interesting innings, full of ups and downs as Sri Lanka scored 201/6 in 20 overs. Netherlands could only score 118 runs in 16.9 overs leading to an eighty three run loss.
Sybrand Engelbrecht’s impressive save
Netherlands’ Sybrand Engelbrecht is undoubtedly one of the, if not the best fielders in T20 cricket. His records show a very athletic list of catches and saves that pin him as one of the biggest assets in the Netherlands team.
Engelbrecht was in deep midwicket when Tim Pringle bowled a thigh-high full toss to Angelo Matthews, who swung it into the leg side. He briefly went in off the boundary before recognizing that it would soar in the cross-wind. He then hurled himself at full stretch to catch the ball over his right shoulder, and in a single motion flipped it back into play as he landed over the boundary cushions.

Engelbrecht downplays his own achievement
The Internet can’t keep calm as Sybrand Engelbrecht’s athletic save goes viral in NED vs SL. The Netherlands player however was very humble, in his take about the big move.
Sybrand seemed as if he was flying as he jumped in the air, to stop Angelo’s boundary, and succeeded in doing so. The video of his play got viral, and had already amassed a million views by the time the match even got over.
“Initially, when he hit it, I kind of moved in,” he explained. “I knew there was a wind, but I didn’t think he hit it that well. So I had to kind of back-track a little and kind of stuck the hand out. I suppose it’s a little bit lucky.”
The overachiever was also disappointed in himself after putting down a tough catch off Matthews in the previous over.
“He actually batted really well, but I had an opportunity to catch him… unfortunately, that cost us quite dearly. But yeah, I’m happy with the effort and I’m happy that it stuck.” He added.
