Right then, that is it from a thrilling Day 1 of this first Test. South Africa are slightly ahead in this game but Bangladesh have done well to not let them get away with it. Day 2 promises to be another exciting one with these two sides battling hard and we could even get a clear picture of where this game is heading by the end of it. All the action will start at 4 am GMT, but you can always join us early for the build-up. Cheers!
South Africa knew that batting would be hard and got off to the worst possible start losing skipper Aiden Markram in the first over. However, Tony de Zorzi held one end solidly and steadied the ship, first with Tristan Stubbs and then with David Bedingham. But none of his partners could stay for long finding it tough against the spinners. Ryan Rickelton came out and tried to be proactive, which worked as he scored 27 off 49 before getting dismissed while de Zorzi followed suit scoring 30. The middle order did struggle, but Wiaan Mulder and Kyle Verreynne have been impressive and managed to extend the lead to 34 runs, and with 4 wickets still in hand, South Africa will be eying to get a lead of around 100 runs which could be massive on this pitch.
Winning the toss and choosing to bat quickly turned out to be the incorrect call for Bangladesh as they found themselves reduced to 45/5 in no time. The ball was swinging and spinning making it very difficult for the batters, but still, it wasn't a wicket where you get bowled out for 106. The only one who looked solid was the opener, Mahmudul Hasan Joy who made a gritty 30 while Mehidy Hasan and Taijul Islam contributed towards the end to get them to a three-digit total. Initially, Wiaan Mulder made the new ball talk and ended up with three wickets, while Kagiso Rabada joined the party late but got his 300th Test wicket and picked up 3 as well. Keshav Maharaj bowled brilliantly as well getting a lot of turn but had to wait for his first and then went on to get a couple more while Dane Piedt chipped in with one.
THE OFFICIAL WORD IS IN AND THAT WILL BE STUMPS ON DAY 1! A fascinating Day 1 where as many as 16 wickets fell comes to an abrupt end! Not sure whether the batters enjoyed it as much as the bowlers but Test cricket is all about challenges and how you find ways to overcome them. It was a day to remember for Kagiso Rabada and Taijul Islam as they reached personal milestones of 300 and 200 Test wickets respectively. Rabada also became the fastest ever to achieve this feat in terms of the number of balls bowled. Also, that brilliant five-for from Taijul has kept Bangladesh in this game after a disaster with the bat earlier.
The light meter is out now! The umpires think that the artificial light has taken over the natural light and it is not safe for us to continue. We can see the players making their way out of the ground now. The reading that the umpire has taken here will be used for the rest of the Test. It is not officially Stumps on Day 1, but it does not look like we will get any more action here and if that is the case, we will be losing 6 overs of play.
