Commentry
Hello, hello, sporting fans all across the globe! A very warm welcome to the year 2025 and we aren't even midway through the month of January but the cricketing calendar looks more stacked than ever. With the recent conclusions of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and Pakistan's tour of South Africa, the international matches will just start to dial down a bit but this means that we will see more than a handful of T20 Leagues take place before the ICC Champions Trophy. When it comes to the South African summer, there is no bigger festival of cricket than the SA20, now in its third year and for the first time, there will be no international matches for South Africa during this period which is a massive win for all the players and it will only make this rapidly growing T20 League a bigger hit. The tournament kicks off in style with two-time reigning champions, Sunrisers Eastern Cape taking on MI Cape Town at St George's Park in Gqeberha and this should be a fascinating contest. Sunrisers Eastern Cape are the defending champions and they simply rocketed their way to their 2nd title last time around with a comfortable win in the Final whereas MI Cape Town failed to qualify for the playoffs. The core of both teams is more or less similar with a few notable changes though. Aiden Markram will yet again lead the reigning champions but he has had a torrid 2024 individually and will eye this tournament to turn things around. At the same time, the likes of Marco Jansen and Tristan Stubbs will be looking to stamp their authority as South Africa's finest modern-day players with both having enjoyed a stellar year or so. Ottneil Baartman will be entrusted with the death bowling and it will be Craig Overton who will take the new ball reigns from the missing Daniel Worrall. It is a seasoned lineup that even features the evergreen Roelof van der Merwe who can prove to be handy. On the other hand, Rashid Khan will look to flip the fortunes of MI Cape Town and on paper, their roster does look fairly stacked. One big miss is obviously Ben Stokes whose return from injury is unknown but Azmatullah Omarzai can take up that pace all-rounder role well. Kagiso Rabada will be expected to improve upon his T20 bowling status and thankfully, he will have the likes of Trent Boult and Nuwan Thushara to aid him. Rassie van der Dussen will have to play the anchoring role with the likes of Dewald Brevis and especially Ryan Rickelton, expected to show much more maturity given his recent positive performances for the national team. All in all, it is a winning team filled with a solid roster going up against a team filled with superstars of the game but since it is a new season, none of that will matter and there will be a few nerves on both sides. Which side do you think will snatch bragging rights in this contest and set the SA20, 2025 ablaze with the win?
