We are down to the third and final game of the ODI series between Sri Lanka and New Zealand at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy. Sri Lanka have already sealed the series, marking their fifth ODI series win in 2024, and will be aiming for a whitewash. For New Zealand, it's more than just pride at stake, as each match holds significance in their build-up toward the 2025 Champions Trophy. The teams weren’t the only ones making the trip from Dambulla to Kandy, as they were accompanied by rain, which reduced the second ODI to a 47-over contest. Chasing 210 runs for victory, Sri Lanka found themselves in a tricky situation, but Kusal Mendis's calm and composed knock guided them over the line with an over to spare. With the series already in the bag and a crucial Test series in South Africa looming, Sri Lanka will likely rest players who are set to feature in the upcoming Test series. Kusal Mendis, who seemed to struggle with a possible groin strain during his innings in the second ODI, could be one of the players rested. Others like Pathum Nissanka and Kamindu Mendis, who are expected to be key in South Africa, might also be given a breather. While the squad for the South Africa Tests hasn’t been announced yet, we could see some rotation in the pace attack as well, with Dilshan Madushanka coming in for Asitha Fernando if they choose to stick with a single seam option. Despite the possible changes, Charith Asalanka will be keen to maintain the intensity and ensure his team stays focused on completing a clean sweep of the series. In New Zealand’s defeat, Mark Chapman finding form and the bowlers making Sri Lanka work hard and almost pulling off a defence would have been the positives. That said, their batting lacked a collective effort, and a couple of fighting knocks from Chapman and Hay were not enough to get them to a match-winning total. Henry Nicholls has endured a quiet outing and will be eager to end the tour on a high, as will Glenn Phillips. As mentioned earlier, with the Champions Trophy not far away, New Zealand could give those who are yet to get a hit in this ODI series a chance, with an aim to build a strong bench. Can the Kiwis salvage a win and leave the Lankan shores on a high, or will Sri Lanka complete a clean sweep? We shall find out together.
