Sanjiv Goenka, owner of the Lucknow Super Giants, was tight-lipped about the team’s retention strategy and the future of captain KL Rahul. He did acknowledge that the upcoming mega auction would prompt a “reset” for the franchise in preparation for IPL 2025. While specifics were not disclosed, it’s clear that significant changes may be on the horizon as the team looks to reposition itself for the next season.
Sanjiv Goenka Talked About LSG’s Future Plans Before IPL 2025:
Goenka was cautious about revealing KL Rahul’s future with the Lucknow franchise, emphasizing his desire to prevent any speculation. He chose to keep details under wraps, aiming to avoid stirring up conjecture regarding Rahul’s status with the team.
He said, “ Look, I’ve been meeting KL regularly over last three years. I’m a little surprised this meeting got so much attention. As I’ve said we have not taken any call till the retention rules are out. But KL has been an integral and important part of the LSG family since inception. He’s played a very important role. He’s like family and will be family.”
KL Rahul, signed by LSG for Rs 17 crore before the IPL 2022 mega auction, has captained the team for the past three seasons. Despite speculation about his departure following a viral conversation with LSG owner Sanjeev Goenka during IPL 2024, no final decisions have been made regarding captaincy or retention. Goenka remains unperturbed, confident that there is ample time to address these matters as the new season approaches.
He further said, “ We have all of September, October and November to decide that. Let the policies be out. We have not even thought about the team going forward, whether retention will be three-four-five or six, we have no clue. Let us see, there is enough time, so bit by bit. Whatever decisions we take today will impact us for the medium term future, so it has to be very well thought out and considered. There is enough time for it so it’s too early. Let the BCCI announce the policy first, then there will be discussions.”
The Lucknow Super Giants are entering a new chapter with the appointment of Zaheer Khan as the team mentor for the 2025 IPL season. The former World Cup-winning pacer will take over the role previously held by Gautam Gambhir, who left to rejoin his former team, Kolkata Knight Riders, before IPL 2024.
