Major Setback for Sri Lanka: Wanindu Hasaranga Ruled Out of ODI Series with Hamstring Injury

The injury woes are still hitting the Sri Lankan squad. Players are getting ruled out. Just before the ODI series started, Matheesha Pathirana and Dilshan Madushanka were ruled out. Now, the team received a bigger setback. Star all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga has been ruled out from the remaining matches due to a left hamstring injury.

Hasaranga’s Injury:

Sri Lanka has been dealt a major setback for the ongoing ODI series against India with the news that star all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga will miss the rest of the series due to a hamstring injury. This injury may have occurred during the first ODI on August 2 in Colombo.

Hasaranga’s injury is a significant blow to Sri Lanka’s bowling attack, which is already weakened by the absences of Dushmantha Chameera, Matheesha Pathirana, and Dilshan Madhushanka. With these key bowlers sidelined, the team is missing crucial bowling depth and experience. Hasaranga’s absence will be a considerable loss for the Sri Lankan side.

The Sri Lankan Cricket Board has given a statement on that. The statement said, “Wanindu Hasaranga will miss the remainder of the ODI series, as the player has suffered an injury to his left hamstring. He experienced pain in his left hamstring while delivering the last ball of his 10th over during the first ODI. An MRI performed on the player, following this, confirmed the injury.”

The Replacement:

In this statement, the cricket board also named the replacement of the star all-rounder. The statement said, “Jeffrey Vandersay comes into the squad in place of Hasaranga.” Jeffrey Vandersay, an experienced leg-spinner with 22 ODIs and 27 wickets, makes a comeback to the national team after last playing in January. His return brings valuable experience to the squad as they face upcoming challenges.

The first ODI match of the series was disappointing for both teams. The match took a dramatic turn and it got tied. It was a small total and Team India was closer to winning. But in the last over, Sri Lankan captain Charitha Asalanka secured two wickets and that turned the game. Before stepping into the second ODI match, both teams are boosted up and try hard to take the lead.
