Recently, England finished off its 4-match ODI series against New Zealand, which was held between September 8 and 15. With England having led the win board, the team is all set to play its final ODI match on September 26 against Ireland in Bristol. Meanwhile, the squad for the World Cup was also announced by England‘s team management, which showcased some uncertain exclusions.
Jason Roy’s dismissal
England’s opener and batsman, Jason Roy, witnessed some recurring back spasms that ruled out his chance in the just-concluded series against New Zealand. However, the 33-year-old Roy was initially a part of England’s World Cup squad, but in a recent change, it was witnessed that he was replaced by the young sensational player Harry Brook. The dismissal came ahead of the former’s injury and in order to give Harry a chance, out of temptation to include a young and active batsman.Â
In between these developments, former England cricketer and assistant coach Marcus Trescothick has urged Roy to remain positive and insisted he think about the importance of playing as a reserve. Speaking in his favor, Marcus said, “I’ve not spoken to Jason; he’s surely disappointed, but you’ve got to remain positive that he can still make an impact. Reserves have a big part in World Cups. If you pick up one injury and someone comes in, they could come in and make a hell of a lot of runs. “If he keeps himself fit and ready to go, should we need him to come out, then we’ll make that call.”
Ahead of his dismissal, Jason Roy opted to not play against Ireland, turning down the management’s offer. To this, Marcus said, “It was a good opportunity for him to play a longer innings and play a bit more.”
Comparing Roy and Brook
Born in South Africa, Jason Roy has played a total of 116 one-day internationals for England, scoring 4,271 runs at a sensational and remarkable strike rate of 105.53. The 33-year-old was eventually planning to retire after having played in the World Cup, but this rather took a U-turn.
While young sensation Harry Brook managed to struggle at 20.50 in six games in the 50-over format, England is all set to face New Zealand in the World Cup opening match on October 5 at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.
