Former wicketkeeper-batter Shreevats Goswami, a member of the triumphant 2008 Under-19 World Cup-winning squad led by Virat Kohli, recently posted two alarming videos on his social media platform. In these videos, he was accused of match-fixing within the Cricket Association of Bengal’s (CAB) first-division league. The allegations have stirred controversy and raised concerns within the cricket community about the integrity of the league and the sport as a whole.
About the Video and His Rection:
On Shreevats Goswami’s social media handle, videos depicting the Mohammedan Sporting versus Town Club match surfaced, alleging intentional wicket loss by Mohammedan Sporting batsmen. This purported act was to concede seven points to their opponents, supposedly tied to former Indian cricket team manager Debabrata Das, who currently holds the position of CAB secretary. Das, previously the Indian team’s administrative manager during the 2022 England tour, faces implications in the controversy, raising concerns about the integrity of cricket administration and competitions under his purview.
The initial footage captures a right-handed batter’s dismissal as they let a delivery hit the off stump. Contrastingly, the subsequent video depicts a left-handed batter advancing down the track, only to be stumped by a wider delivery. These instances add weight to allegations of intentional batting mishaps, fueling suspicions of match-fixing within the Mohammedan Sporting versus Town Club encounter.
He posted, “This is a Super Division match in Kolkata Club Cricket, two big teams doing this, any idea what’s going on here? I am ashamed to see this having played the game which is so close to my heart. I love cricket and I love playing in Bengal but looking at this breaks my heart. Club cricket is heart and soul of Bengal cricket please don’t ruin it. I think this is called ‘got up’ cricket. Where is the media now?”
CAB’s Reaction:
While Debabrata Das has remained silent on the accusations, CAB president Snehasish Ganguly has taken action, requesting a report from the umpires. He said, “ We have called a tournament committee meeting on March 2 to take up the matter”.
The three-day fixture at the 22 Yards Academy in Salt Lake concluded on Wednesday, resulting in Town Club securing seven points. Shakib Habib Gandhi’s remarkable innings of 223 propelled Town Club to a total of 446 runs. In response, Mohammedan Sporting could only manage 281/9, with Joyjit Basu leading the scoring with a century knock. However, Sporting faced a collapse after Basu’s dismissal, casting further suspicion on the match’s integrity.
