Matthew Hayden Praises Rahul Dravid’s Legacy and Character in Emotional Tribute

Legendary Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden has heaped praise on India’s cricketing icon Rahul Dravid, acknowledging his immense contribution to the game, both on and off the field. During the Ceat Cricket Rating Awards, Hayden reminisced about Dravid’s famous innings and commended his character, which stood out for its grace and fairness, even under immense pressure.

Dravid, known as “The Wall” of Indian cricket, became famous for his calm and composed demeanor on the field. He played a crucial role in some of India’s greatest victories, particularly during the iconic 2001 Test against Australia at Eden Gardens. Dravid’s 180-run knock, in partnership with VVS Laxman’s memorable 281, played a pivotal role in one of the greatest comebacks in Test cricket history.

Reflecting on this historic moment, Hayden recalled, “From an Australian point of view, that partnership at Eden Gardens was sacred. We walked onto the bus that day in Kolkata, and Michael Slater had a box of Cuban cigars, thinking we’d retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. But Rahul had something else in mind, batting all day with Laxman in an extraordinary partnership.”

Hayden, who has faced Dravid numerous times, also highlighted the Indian legend’s strong principles. “Rahul played with great grace, composure, and a strong sense of fairness. In a game where players can be tempted to win at all costs, Rahul Dravid won on the principles of cricket and life.”
