At the CEAT Cricket Awards 2024, former Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden took a trip down memory lane as he reflected on Rahul Dravid’s iconic career. Hayden, who witnessed Dravid’s resilience firsthand, recalled the legendary partnership between Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman during the 2001 Test match at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. This partnership, he noted, was a game-changer that defied all expectations and left the Australian side stunned. Dravid, who was recently honoured with the ‘Lifetime Achievement’ award, was hailed for his grace, composure, and unwavering principles, both as a player and a coach.
The Historic Eden Gardens Partnership
Matthew Hayden highlighted how the 376-run stand between Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman during the 2001 Test match against Australia at Eden Gardens remains one of the most iconic moments in cricket history.
After a dismal first innings by India, where they were forced to follow on, the partnership not only saved the match but led India to a memorable victory.
Hayden revealed how the Australian side was confident of retaining the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the time, even jokingly preparing to celebrate with cigars.
However, Dravid and Laxman’s remarkable determination shattered their hopes.
Hayden’s Tribute to Rahul Dravid
In his speech, Hayden commended Dravid not just for his batting skills but for the values he embodied on and off the field.
According to Hayden, Dravid’s calm and collected approach, even under immense pressure, made him a true champion.
He particularly admired Dravid’s leadership and the example he set during difficult situations, such as the Test at Adelaide.
Hayden praised how Dravid, even in the face of fierce competition, always played with grace and fairness.
This, Hayden noted, is what made Dravid stand out not just as a cricketer but as a person.
