Matthew Wade Rebuked by ICC for Disputing Umpire Decision in the Match Against England

The T20 World Cup is going on. The entire cricket world is experiencing the thrill of the tournament. But the England vs Australia match saw an uncanny moment on the field. The Australian player Matthew Wade, received an official reprimand for violating Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct in the game against England at the Kensington Oval in Barbados.

The Uncanny Moment on the Field:

In the 18th over of Australia’s innings, a dispute arose involving Matthew Wade. He struck a delivery from leg-spinner Adil Rashid back to the bowler, expecting it to be declared a ‘dead ball’ by the umpire. However, when the umpire, Menon, didn’t make this call, Wade engaged in a heated discussion with him, feeling aggrieved by the decision.

During the discussion, Wade’s teammates claimed that the music on the ground was still playing when Rashid began his run-up, suggesting it should have been a dead ball. However, Menon disagreed, stating that Wade had made contact with the ball. Despite Wade’s protests, Menon stood firm in his decision, instructing Wade to focus on batting.

The Punishment:

Umpires Nitin Menon, Joel Wilson, Asif Yaqoob, and Jayaraman Madangopal charged Wade. A Level 1 breach results in an official reprimand, a fine of up to 50% of the player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points. Wade accepted the charge without a hearing, acknowledging the penalty proposed by Andy Pycroft from the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees.
