MCA issues statement after Musheer Khan gets injured in a car accident

Musheer Khan, the Mumbai allrounder and younger brother of India batter Sarfaraz Khan, is unlikely to participate in the upcoming Irani Cup after suffering a serious neck injury in a road accident. The accident occurred on Friday while Musheer was traveling from his hometown, Azamgarh, to Lucknow for the Irani Cup, set to begin on October 1.

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) confirmed the injury in a statement on Saturday, stating that Musheer had “a fracture in the neck region” but was stable, conscious, and well-oriented. Hospital reports indicate that Musheer is out of danger, though he remains under observation.

The accident happened when the SUV Musheer was traveling in collided with a median on the outskirts of Lucknow, causing the vehicle to topple. Musheer’s father and two other passengers were also in the car at the time of the accident.

MCA Statement

“Once Musheer is deemed medically fit for travel, he will be flown to Mumbai for further evaluation and additional medical treatment,” the MCA statement said. “The timeline for his recovery will be determined following these assessments.

Musheer, who was set to represent Mumbai in the prestigious Irani Cup, is now expected to miss not only that match but also the first few rounds of the upcoming Ranji Trophy season. His injury comes as a setback after a stellar start to his first-class career, where he scored three centuries, including a double-hundred in the Ranji Trophy quarter-final last season. Earlier this month, Musheer impressed with a 181-run knock in the Duleep Trophy against a strong India A side.

Meanwhile, Sarfaraz Khan has been released from the India Test squad in Kanpur to join Mumbai for the Irani Cup, as his inclusion depended on not being picked in the playing XI for the ongoing Test against Bangladesh.

The MCA is yet to announce a replacement for Musheer in the squad led by Ajinkya Rahane.
