McGrath Urges Aussies to Target an Emotional Kohli In BGT

Glenn McGrath suggests Australian bowlers target Virat Kohli’s emotions to gain an edge in the Test series opener.

McGrath Urges Australian Bowlers to Exploit Kohli’s Emotions

Legendary pacer Glenn McGrath has urged Australian bowlers to exploit Virat Kohli’s emotional approach during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.

McGrath believes Kohli’s form in red-ball cricket has been inconsistent, especially after a subpar performance against New Zealand.

Ahead of the high-stakes Test series, McGrath highlighted Kohli’s vulnerability to pressure and emotional duels on the field.

Speaking to CODE Sports, McGrath stated, “Without a doubt, especially after coming off a 3-0 loss against New Zealand, you’ve got plenty of ammunition to back yourself up,” McGrath told CODE Sports.

“So put the pressure on them and see if they’re up for it.” He added that Kohli’s emotional nature can either fire him up or disrupt his rhythm.

Kohli’s Record and Current Challenges

Despite his current struggles, Kohli has a remarkable record in Australia, scoring six Test centuries and averaging over 54.

However, he is yet to notch a Test century in 2024. McGrath emphasised that a couple of low scores early in the series could intensify Kohli’s pressure.

Australian bowlers are likely to use short deliveries and engaging chatter to unnerve Kohli, aiming to disrupt his focus. McGrath said, “If they go hard at him, who knows, he might lift or crumble.”

“But I think he’s probably under pressure a little bit, and if he has a couple of low scores to start with, he could really feel it.

“I think he’s quite an emotional player. When he’s up, he’s up, and when he’s down, he sort of struggles a little bit.”

Practice Sessions Highlight Concerns

Kohli’s recent practice sessions have shown glimpses of both struggle and resilience.

During match simulations in Perth, Kohli edged a short delivery but later regained composure during extended net sessions.

This duality underscores his battle with consistency and the potential challenges he faces against a disciplined Australian attack.

The series opener promises to be a test of Kohli’s mental fortitude as much as his technical skill.
