Mis-‘management’ hurting team India in a world cup year

Team India is dealing with constant injuries in the last 2 years, more so in the last year. Star pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah is ruled out of the IPL and the final of the World Test Championship. Recently during the 4th test match, Shreyas Iyer complained of back pain and was taken for scans. The reports revealed that the middle-order batter has been ruled out of most of the parts of IPL.

India’s never ending injury list

There is a never-ending injury list in this current Indian setup. Deepak Chahar has been dealing with injuries ever since he has been playing for the nation. Fast bowler Prasidh Krishna will not participate in the IPL in 2023 owing to his recovery and rehabilitation. Sanju Samson, KL Rahul, and Washington Sundar have been missing matches due to injuries.

There are only a handful of players who have played over 30 international matches in a year. Prasidh Krishna has last featured for India in an ODI against Zimbabwe last year.

Injuries are part and parcel of the game. But what’s more frustrating is that despite the players spending so much time at the NCA, they have not been able to fully recover from their injuries. The injuries have been mishandled by the management. There was so much chaos around the injury of Jasprit Bumrah. He was first declared fit to play during the Sri Lanka series ahead of the Border Gavaskar Trophy. Later he was not only ruled out of the Sri Lanka ODI series but also could not feature in the entire BGT series.

A source expressed his unhappiness over the mismanagement of the National Cricket Association (NCA).

“How does one expect to play with a core group when the primary players are breaking down despite such thorough workload management? The issue is being raised with NCA. The team management and the selectors are back to creating a set of backup players now. There has to be someone accountable for this,” a source told TOI.

“These injuries that are happening now are serious ones. They would require a lot of time to recover and be back in full flow. Making a settled team has become a challenge. The NCA has taken charge of ‘targeted’ and ‘emerging’ players on the state sides.

“To have a situation where you play these players directly in big tournaments is not ideal. The selectors were still found with Bumrah even playing directly in the World Cup but to have a group of such players is unpleasant,” the source added.

Nitin Patel was promoted from Team India’s physio to head of sports science and sports medicine, beating out three other outstanding candidates, the BCCI completely reorganized the NCA’s organizational structure. The “return to play” of athletes is the focus of a committed team.

How mis-‘management’ is hurting team IndiaIndia cannot afford any more injuries in a world cup year. The team has been a victim of unnecessary injuries in the past. T Natarajan, the pacer in form who was in contention to play the T20 World Cup 2021 was injured before the World Cup hampering India’s chances. A similar incident occurred when Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out of the T20 World Cup 2022. Again there is a threat to India’s chances in this World Cup with 2 key members Shreyas Iyer and Bumrah injured.
