Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif has shared his thoughts on the recent decision by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to appoint Suryakumar Yadav as the new T20I captain over Hardik Pandya. While Kaif acknowledges Yadav’s impressive credentials, he believes Pandya could have been a more suitable choice for the role.
Pandya vs Suryakumar: The Selection Debate
The BCCI’s announcement of the T20I squad for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka on July 18 revealed that Suryakumar Yadav will be leading the team, a role that was anticipated to be taken up by Hardik Pandya. Pandya, who was the vice-captain during India’s successful T20 World Cup campaign last month, seemed a natural choice to succeed Rohit Sharma, who retired from T20I cricket after the World Cup. However, Yadav’s appointment has sparked debate.
Kaif’s Support for Pandya
Kaif respects Yadav’s remarkable batting skills but argues that Pandya’s leadership experience should have been a decisive factor. Pandya has a proven track record as a captain, having led the Gujarat Titans to the IPL title in 2022 and guiding them to the finals in 2023. His leadership experience with the T20I side and his role as vice-captain in the World Cup adds to his credentials.
“Hardik has captained the Gujarat Titans for 2 years and in their first year itself, they made it to the final… Hardik has experience captaining the T20I side. He was also the vice-captain at the T20 World Cup. Now, a new coach has arrived, there will be new planning. Surya is also a good player, he has been playing for years. He is a No. 1 T20 player, I hope he will shoulder the captain’s responsibility well. But I feel they should have backed Hardik,” Kaif said in a statement quoted by TOI.
Gambhir’s Influence and Fitness Concerns
Kaif also noted that new head coach Gautam Gambhir, with his vast experience, might have had a significant role in the decision-making process. He believes that Pandya’s exclusion from the captaincy is not due to any significant lapse in his performance or behavior.
“Gambhir is the experienced captain and coach… He understands cricket very well. I think ‘Hardik ne aisa koi galat kaam nahi kiya ki unko captaincy na mile’ (Hardik has not done anything wrong that he should not get the captaincy),” Kaif remarked.
Future Prospects for Pandya
Pandya’s leadership and fitness have come under scrutiny, with some speculating that his recent injury issues may have influenced the selectors’ decision. Pandya’s IPL tenure with the Mumbai Indians in 2024 was challenging, as the team finished last under his captaincy.
Despite this, Kaif emphasized Pandya’s leadership qualities and his ability to build a successful team from scratch, as evidenced by his achievements with the Gujarat Titans. The former cricketer believes that Pandya deserved the opportunity to continue leading the T20I side.
