Former India spinner Murali Kartik recalled a heartwarming moment when he was invited by Gautam Gambhir to hand over Mayank Yadav his maiden T20I cap ahead of the first T20I between India and Bangladesh in Gwalior. Kartik, who was in Gwalior for broadcast duties, expressed his emotions after participating in the memorable ceremony on Sunday, October 6.
The Gwalior crowd witnessed history as Mayank Yadav, a 22-year-old pacer from West Delhi, donned the India jersey for the first time at the newly inaugurated Shrimant Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Stadium. Mayank’s debut was nothing short of impressive. His first over in international cricket was a maiden, and he secured his maiden wicket in the second over. He finished with commendable figures of 1 for 21.
Kartik, known for his eloquent insights during commentary, was deeply touched by Gambhir’s gesture. “What a memorable day for this Speed Merchant #MayankYadav. It took me back 25 years when I received my cap from Sachin and Kapil paaji. A touching moment for me personally to be asked to present the cap by Gautam Gambhir,” Kartik shared in a social media post.
A Fast-Track Journey to India Debut
Mayank Yadav had only played four matches in the IPL 2024 season, but those performances were enough to earn him a spot in the Indian squad. Known for his ability to consistently clock over 150 kph, Mayank was fast-tracked into the national team after recovering from a back injury. His raw pace and control caught the eye of selectors, and he was rewarded with a debut against Bangladesh in the T20I series.
In addition to Mayank, India also handed a debut to all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy. Former India wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel was given the honor of presenting Nitish with his maiden cap. Both debutants contributed to India’s seven-wicket victory over Bangladesh. Nitish played a calm knock of 16 not out, ensuring India chased down the 128-run target in just 11.5 overs.
India’s Dominant Win
Led by Hardik Pandya’s all-round performance, India took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Hardik’s contributions with both bat and ball were crucial in securing the victory. Pandya’s quick-fire cameo and disciplined bowling further boosted India’s dominance in the match.
Mayank Yadav’s debut added a significant chapter to India’s growing pool of fast bowlers. His ability to handle pressure and deliver in his very first outing on the international stage was widely praised. Parthiv Patel lauded Mayank’s composure, noting how the young pacer showed “no nerves” during his spell.
