Olympic silver medalist Neeraj Chopra has secured his spot in the Diamond League final, which will be held in Brussels on September 13 and 14. Neeraj’s place in the final was confirmed after his season’s best throw of 89.49 meters in Lausanne earlier this year.
The 2024 Diamond League season saw Neeraj competing in only two editions—Doha and Lausanne—where he finished second in both events. Despite not participating in the Zurich leg, Neeraj accumulated 14 points, placing him fourth overall in the rankings. Grenada’s Anderson Peters leads the standings with 29 points, followed by Germany’s Julian Weber (21 points) and Czech Republic’s Jakub Vadlejch (16 points). Moldova’s Andrian Mardare and Japan’s Roderick Genki Dean complete the top six, with Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem missing out on the final with only five points.
Neeraj’s best performance of the season came in Lausanne, where he recorded an impressive throw of 89.49 meters, falling just short of the elusive 90-meter mark. Throughout his career, the Indian javelin star has come close to this milestone but is yet to surpass it.
Neeraj’s Olympic Success and Diamond League Journey
Earlier this year, Neeraj added an Olympic silver medal to his accolades at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Despite a shaky start in the final, his throw of 89.45 meters on the second attempt secured him the second spot on the podium. This followed his gold medal-winning performance at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Neeraj’s track record in the Diamond League has also been noteworthy. In 2022, he topped the standings in Zurich, followed by a second-place finish in Eugene in 2023. The upcoming final in Brussels will be another opportunity for the 26-year-old to make his mark on the global stage.
As Neeraj prepares for the final, the focus remains on whether he can finally breach the 90-meter mark and solidify his status as one of the greatest javelin throwers in history.
