New BCB President Faruque Ahmed  Seeks New Head Coach and Tamim Iqbal’s Return

BCB President Faruque Ahmed aims to replace head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe, citing misalignment with the team’s needs, and is hopeful for Tamim Iqbal’s return to international cricket.

BCB President Faruque Ahmed Eyes Coaching Change

In his first press conference as the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president, Faruque Ahmed made it clear that he wants to find a replacement for current head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe.

Ahmed, who has been vocal about his dissatisfaction with Hathurusinghe even before assuming his new role, emphasised his stance during the media interaction.

“I am yet to find out about Chandika Hathurusinghe’s contract. I have to see some stuff officially but I have not moved from my previous stance,” said Ahmed.

He acknowledged that while Hathurusinghe’s contract runs until February 2025, the BCB is considering preparing a shortlist of potential replacements.

According to Ahmed, Hathurusinghe’s approach has not aligned well with the team’s needs, and his tenure has seen a lack of stability within the squad.

Ahmed’s concerns are rooted in the underwhelming performances of the Bangladesh team under Hathurusinghe’s second stint, including the recent T20 World Cup and disruptions in the dressing room.

Ahmed criticised the decision to bring Hathurusinghe back, suggesting that it was a mistake driven by a misplaced belief in the coach’s “magic.”

Hopes for Tamim Iqbal’s Return to International Cricket

Apart from the coaching situation, Ahmed also expressed his desire to see former captain Tamim Iqbal return to international cricket.

Tamim, who had briefly retired last year before making a U-turn, has been absent from international matches since September 2023.

He also opted out of the central contracts, raising questions about his future.

Ahmed is keen on understanding Tamim’s future plans, particularly in the ODI format, which he believes suits Tamim best at this stage of his career.

“I would like to see Tamim Iqbal play for two or three years more,” said Ahmed, adding that if Tamim decides not to return as a player, he would welcome his involvement with the board, recognizing his leadership qualities.
