BCCI will be allowing the new IPL franchises to choose three players even before the auction. The new retention policy suggests that the old franchises can keep eight players before going to the IPL 2022 auction. Therefore, the board has decided to allow the new teams to give some advantage too.
Al old eight IPL teams reportedly can keep four players ahead of the mega auction planned for next year. CVC Capital and RCSG group have acquired the ownerships of two IPL teams based in Ahmedabad and Lucknow. Now they can pick three players from the players pool before the start of auction. The new IPL season will see 10 teams fighting for the title making the league even larger. According to the report by ESPNCricinfo, the new teams can have the choice from the players’ pool once the list of retained players is finalised ahead of the new edition. According to the report, teams are expected to have INR 90 crore (USD 12 million approx) in their purse for the IPL 2022 auction. The dates of the mega auction are yet to be revealed by the BCCI.
An official told InsideSport, “It’s a proposal and we have had a discussion on the matter (three picks) but it’s not yet final. A lot of things are still to be worked out. It was discussed to level the playing field for the two new teams as they will start from scratch. RTMs will be decided soon.”
On the other hand, an IPL franchise told the same portal, “We (the particular franchise) don’t agree to the three picks from the pool until and unless BCCI informs us clearly on the RTMs. The question is will we be able to use RTM for players whom new teams will target as the first three picks? We need clarity on that.”
