Luke Fletcher, the stalwart seamer for Nottinghamshire, has announced that he will be leaving the club at the end of the current season. Known for his resilience and dedication, Fletcher has been a key player for Nottinghamshire since his debut in 2008. His departure marks the end of an era for the club and its supporters, who have witnessed his significant contributions on the field over the years.
A Career Marked by Perseverance
On Wednesday, Fletcher will turn 36. Since making his Nottinghamshire debut in 2008, he has claimed 442 first-class wickets, 93 List A wickets, and 108 T20 wickets. He was allowed to return to club cricket at Papplewick and Linby after advancing through the age group system at Trent Bridge. He even worked on the club’s gates there before securing a regular starting position in 2009.
He became a cult hero at Trent Bridge for his wholehearted approach to the game, and played a role in six title-winning campaigns, including their County Championship triumph in 2010 and two T20 Blast titles in 2017 and 2020. “For a local lad to represent this club is an honor , and I never could have expected the career I’ve had,” Fletcher said. “My overwhelming feeling now is how grateful I am for all the years I’ve spent with Notts and the memories I have made along the way,” He continued.
“A location is only as excellent as the people that inhabit it, and I’ve had the honor of sharing a dressing room with so many wonderful people and forming lifelong friendships. However, it also affects everyone who works at the club, including the ticket office, cooks, ground crew, community teams, changing room attendants, and a host of other employees. It has all meant a lot to me that I have been here for such a long time.” He mentioned.
“Although I’m sorry to be leaving the club, I’m really happy with what I’ve accomplished. Trent Bridge has always seemed like home, and it always will.” Fletcher had the best year of his time with the team in 2021, when he took 66 wickets at an average of 14.9 to win PCA County Championship Player of the Year. That occurred four years after he suffered a potentially fatal setback to his career in 2017 during a Twenty20 match against the Birmingham Bears when he was hit in the head by a drive from Sam Hain. He recovered fully from that tragedy.
Legacy and Future Aspirations
Only five players have ever taken 100 T20 wickets for Nottinghamshire, and he has eight career top scores of 92 among his eight fifties for the team. “There’s a good reason Luke is a hugely popular character,” Nottinghamshire’s director of cricket Mick Newell stated. “He has played with a smile on his face, made countless friends, and given this club his all” he continued.
Stuart Broad, who was teammates with some of the finest players of his generation, calling Fletch ‘the best team-mate you could possibly have’ says a lot. “Having served as his home county’s representative for almost 20 years means a great deal to him, and the members and supporters who adore him in return have honored his commitment.”
“His accomplishments and statistics are also noteworthy; he has put forth a great deal of effort to become the greatest at what he does, and it has paid off. “We wish him all the best wherever he goes, and whatever he does – he will always get a warm welcome and special reception at Trent Bridge.”
