Orange Cap Holder of IPL 2023: Updated After GT vs MI Match 35

On a hot and humid evening in Ahmedabad, the Gujarat Titans secured their second consecutive victory, steamrolling the Mumbai Indians by 55 runs. Even though the game saw a mammoth score of 207 runs being scored by the Gujarat Titans, the Orange Cap list has only reflected one change.

Gill lays a strong foundation for GT

Shubman Gill has done a great job opening for the Gujarat Titans this season. The right-handed batter is the franchise’s most successful batter this season with 284 runs in 7 games. He has an impressive average of 40.57, coupled with a strike rate of 142.57. Even in today’s game, Gill delivered when GT needed him to. This was an important encounter for the Gujarat Titans as Mumbai was the only team they had not defeated in the IPL ever. So, when the opportunity presented itself, Gill took it with both hands.

Opening the batting alongside Wriddhiman Saha, Gill scored 56 off 34 balls in front of a gigantic Ahmedabad crowd. This inning was even more special, considering the circumstances it came in. GT lost Wriddhiman Saha early in the innings, and Hardik Pandya didn’t seem to be in his touch. Thus, Gill took the responsibility upon himself and kept the Gujarat innings moving. His inning included 7 fours and a huge six off Cameron Green. After this inning, Gill has propelled himself to the 4th spot in the Orange Cap list.

Faf’s domination continues

Faf du Plessis has absolutely dominated this edition of the Indian Premier League with the bat. He currently holds the Orange Cap with 405 runs in 7 games. The best part about his dominance is that it has not been challenged by anyone up until this point. He has a mammoth lead of 91 runs from Devon Conway, who is at the 2nd spot with 314 runs in 7 games.

However, after Gill’s entry back into the top 10 of the Orange Cap, LSG’s Kyle Mayers has slipped out of the list. He is currently in the 11th spot, and may soon find his way back into the list when his team next faces the Punjab Kings on Friday, April 28th. Other big names in the list are Virat Kohli (5th spot), David Warner (3rd spot), KL Rahul (7th spot), Jos Buttler (10th spot), and Glenn Maxwell (9th spot).
