Orange Cap Holder of IPL 2023: Updated After GT vs RR Match 23

In the doubleheader today, Mumbai Indians continued their domination over a struggling Kolkata Knight Riders in the first game whereas Rajasthan Royals pulled off a magical run chase in the second one. After two intense games, the Orange Cap has seen quite a few changes in the order.

Venkatesh Iyer scores a century

Venkatesh Iyer created history today by being only the second batter in the history of the IPL to score a century for the Kolkata Knight Riders. The first century for KKR came way back in 2008 in the inauguration game of the IPL, and it was Brendon McCullum who hit that. Iyer came in to bat after an early wicket of Narayan Jagadeeshan in the second over by Cameron Green.

The left-handed batter took the MI bowlers for a ride, giving no respect to any MI bowler whatsoever. In his inning of 104 runs, Iyer hit 6 fours and 9 gigantic sixes all around the park. With his century, Iyer is now the highest run-getter in the league, surpassing Punjab Kings skipper Shikhar Dhawan by just 1 run. He now has 234 runs this season at an average of 46.80.

Batters day out

Since it was a Sunday, fans were expecting to see some big hits and the batters made sure to give them exactly that. Several batters shot to the limelight, and can even be found in the Orange Cap list. Let’s start with Shubman Gill. Gill has been having a year to remember, first in international cricket, and now at the IPL as well. His score of 45 from 34 balls has seen him get a huge jump from the 7th spot to the 3rd spot with 228 runs in 5 games.

Shimron Hetmyer of Rajasthan Royals and Tilak Varma of Mumbai Indians have also found their way back into the top 10 of the Orange Cap list. While Hetmyer is at the 9th spot with 183 runs, Varma is at the 10th spot with 177 runs and is currently Mumbai Indians’ highest run-getter in the tournament.

However, Jos Buttler had a horrible outing as he was clean-bowled by Mohammed Shami for a duck. As a result, he has dropped down two spots, from 4th place to 6th place in the Orange Cap list.
